When she was orphaned at age 14, the maker of this story cloth was left to raise her baby sister on her own. She enrolled in a sewing class and was able to earn a living to support herself and her sister. Only much later did she come to appreciate her resilience and accomplishments.
In Swahili, she stitched, “I enjoyed the training, for it reminds me of the way I have lived together with a child in my care, after the death of my mother.”
